Informazioni sul prodotto

St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a shrubby plant with beautiful yellow flowers with oval, elongated petals. The name stems from the fact that it blooms around 24 June, which is traditionally celebrated as the birthday of John the Baptist. Wort is an old English word for plant.

St. John's wort can be found throughout Europe, Western Asia and North Africa. Actually it's a common weed seen by roadsides, on heathland and in woods.

The usage of the herb dates back to ancient Greece. Both the flowers and leaves served some function. The active component of St. John's wort is called hypericine.

How to grow St. John's wort

Hypericum perforatum is not a particularly demanding plant to grow, as it requires very little to successfully flower. This also explains why it's so common in the wild.

The seeds are best placed in dry, well-drained alkaline soil. Plant the seeds in autumn, as they need the cold to be able to germinate.

You can harvest from may until early summer, with a full bloom around 24 June. Cut the plant all the way down to the soil, so it can continue growing in the winter.

Hypericum perforatum usage

To make an infusion, pour a cup of boiling water onto 1-2 teaspoons of the dried herb and leave to infuse for 10-15 minutes.

St. John's wort may support a positive outlook and mood, and makes one more resistant to stressful situations.
