Spirulina




Blue-green algae is a group of 1,500 species of microscopic aquatic plants, of which spirulina is a well-known example. The two most common species used for human consumption are Arthrospira platensis en Spirulina maxima 



Spirulina does naturally occur in Africa, Asia and South America, it habitates in tropical and subtropical lakes with a high pH level and high concentrations of carbonates and bicarbonates.
Most of the health benefits to humans that were adressed to spirulina and other blue-green algae supplementation are supported by anecdotes rather than scientific research. Spirulina is particularly rich in protein (60%) and it also contains carotenoids, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids.
Effects
According to some sources spirulina might:
- Strengthen the immune system
- Support cardiovascular function and healthy cholesterol
- Improve gastrointestinal and digestive health
- Enhance natural cleansing and detoxification
- Improve a healthy skin
Usage
Long time consumers suggest 2-5 grams daily for significant health benefits. This is about a teaspoon of powder. Because spirulina is a whole food, you can take it alone or with meals. Mix spirulina powder with some fruit juice, a smoothie or vegetable juice.

Spirulina contains vitamins (B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (nicotinamide), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid), B12 (cyanocobalamin), vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E) minerals ( calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium, and zinc),
many pigments (chlorophyll-a, xanthophyll, beta-carotene, echinenone, myxoxanthophyll, zeaxanthin, canthaxanthin, diatoxanthin, 3'-hydroxyechinenone, beta-cryptoxanthin, oscillaxanthin, plus the phycobiliproteins c-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin), proteins
all essential amino acids and essential acids (gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and also provides alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid (LA), stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and arachidonic acid (AA)).
